Wade House

Wade House

A new-build home that fits in while standing out, Wade House explores how architecture can at once conform to its context and challenge convention. Built on a former backland garage plot on Ruislip’s Manor estate, tight planning parameters meant that the house needed to mirror its neighbours: 1930’s suburban homes, defined by bay windows, mock-Tudor gables, and traditional hipped roofs.

Wade House follows this form. However, sharpened detail distinguishes it. This creates a concurrent feeling that the house is exactly the same, yet entirely different – belonging, without blending in.

Britain has a tendency to look back, and regard the future with suspicion. Planning policy often reduces buildings to a series of approved shapes and materials, assuming that controlling these elements will recreate the past. Wade House turns that logic on its head. By refining overlooked moments - corners, flashings, gutters - the perception radically shifts.

The exterior is divided into thirds, with brick on the ground floor, render above, and clay tiles on the roof. Though the materials are familiar, their articulation is less typical. Extruded bricks set in a four-point pattern add shadow and depth, and alternating roof tiles create an almost pixelated affect.

Internally, Wade House makes clever use of space, creating a two-storey, two-bedroom home within the minimum footprint outlined by The London Plan. A tucked-away staircase and open-plan living area maximise the tight layout, while the bedrooms gain vertical space by opening up to the roof’s structure.

Recurring design motifs both nod to local heritage and reimagine it. The semi-circle motif, echoing the curving bay window, appears from the very first touch-point - the pedestrian gate latch - and continues through to the patio, overhang, stained glass, kitchen island, and even in the staircase handrail.

Wade House takes its name from a local builder whose family has been shaping the neighbourhood since the 1960's. Developed by the builder’s daughter, Wade House continues that legacy, reinterpreting suburban forms for a new generation.
